What Is A Femtocell?

What Is A Femtocell?

A femtocell looks just like a wireless router and acts as a wireless access point that routes mobile phone calls over the Internet via VoIP technology.  Femtocells are used not only to lower cell network usage but also to help enhance cell phone reception in areas where signals are weak.  A femtocell in affect creates a mini cell network that offers the same benefits as a cell booster plus a whole new list of advantages.

At first glance most people think a femtocell is a wireless router of some sort. Femtocells have a striking resemblance to wireless routers but they do very different things. When someone has a femtocell and they are in range of it the femtocell will grab their cell call and route it over their broadband Internet connection through a VoIP network and on to the person they are calling. What this does is eliminate the need for an actual cell signal where the femtocell is and also helps to remove cell traffic from a resource strained network.

The idea behind femtocells is for cell carriers to sell them along with regular usage plans and then offer an unlimited femtocell minutes options for something like $20 a month. The end result would be no need for any type of land line or the expensive unlimited voice plan that most carriers are now offering for a ridiculous $99.99 per month.

Although femtocells are expected to be huge over the next several years most people have not yet heard about them. They are expected to be widely available in the near future and the number of users is also expected to skyrocket over the next several years. One of the most highly anticipated femtocells out there is the Femto Jack, which this site is dedicated to. The FemtoJack is expected to be one of the cheapest femtocells in regards to both the device itself and the usage fee. Since the femto Jack will be made by Ymax Corporation, who is not a cell carrier, it is believed that it will be a lot cheaper since their motive will be to gain customers rather than supplement their revenue. If the femto Jack price is anywhere near what people currently pay for the magic Jack then it will be a great deal.

What Is the Magic Jack USB Phone?

What Is the Magic Jack USB Phone?

The magic Jack is a small USB VoIP device that allows users to make unlimited local and long distance  phone calls through their computer or a regular phone at fraction of the cost of a traditional land line. This small USB device is only slightly bigger than a standard zip drive and can be had for $39.99 which includes 1 year of phone service. After the first year magic Jack owners can renew their service at a cost of just $19.95 per year.

The magic Jack uses VoIP technology to route calls through the Internet by turning them into digital information packets and then converting them back to voice data on the other callers end. Magic Jack users shouldn’t be able to notice any differences in this new technology when they have their magic Jack hooked up to a regular phone. To them it should be exactly the same as if they were using their old land line, except for the cheaper price of course. Plus the magic Jack comes with the added benefit of being able to be used without an actual phone. This makes the magic Jack great for travel since users can travel without a phone and just use the magic Jack software to make calls straight from their computer. Another great thing about the magic Jack is that it comes with all of the standard features of regular phone service including caller ID, call waiting, directory assistance, voicemail, and much much more.

We have not reviewed how well the magic Jack actually works since we are primarily focused on the FemtoJack but if it’s voice quality and reliability or as good as advertised then we think that it would be great to have while waiting for the femto Jack to come out.
